In contrast to the handcraft items made in the West, traditional Japanese handcrafts are not generally regarded as expressions of an individual artisan’s creativity. Rather, they are understood to be byproducts of a larger cultural context, as objects whose form and function have evolved along with the work, domestic life and religious practices of Japanese society as a whole.
