Animal Glues
Natural animal glues consist of complexanimal proteins (collagen) which mustbe heated in order to be used. They aremade from the processed hides andbones of animals and are chemicallyvery similar to gelatin. Animal glueshave been used for over 4,000 yearsand are ideally suited for makingstrong, non-toxic bonds which areresistant to the effects of age. Animalglue bonds can also be easily reversedby reheating them, meaning objectsmade using animal glue are easier torestore. A Stradivarius violin made 300years ago is still impressive in appearanceand sound, partly due to the specialproperties of the animal glue used tohold it together.
Any woodworker whois interested in preserving the naturalqualities of the wood in their workshould consider using animal glues.Contrary to popular belief, animal gluesare relatively easy to use. The most criticalfactor is the glue pot itself. It mustbe water-jacketed to allow controlledheating and the strict maintenance of adefined temperature range (60° - 70° C)to prevent the glue from denaturingand losing bond strength. Glue shouldalways be used the day it is first heated.
