Bento boxes are used in Japan for carryinglunches and picnics. Once filledwith sushi, onigiri, rice cakes and othertreats they have provided many a wearystudent, office worker or traveller withthe necessary calories to finish theirday. These elegant boxes are also suitablefor storing jewelry, gifts, clothitems and other objects dear to theowner’s heart. They are made of bentJapanese cedar (Sugi), a type of woodwhich smells good and is resistant tothe damaging effects of water, bacteriaand insects as well. The seams are heldtogether with cherry bark. The bottomof the boxes and lids are held bygrooves in the sides of the boxes andsecured using wooden nails.
